Ashley of Hollywood Noir Makeup cosplaying as Columbia from the Rocky Horror Picture Show

The Rocky Horror Picture Show has always been one of my favorite cult classics, so I wanted to pay homage to the undeniably campy and outlandish make up and revisit the series on my channel just in time for Halloween. Columbia is definitely the most vibrant and plucky character among the cast, so if you’re going to use this for cosplay or a Halloween costume, this is your chance to be vibrant, garish and embrace your inner drag queen.

I began the look by covering my eyebrows using the popular glue stick method. I will be doing a video on this before Halloween for all of you that may be interested for cosplay, drag or special FX purposes. Next, I applied a white cream color from my Make Up Forever Flash Palette to further conceal my brows before stippling on my foundation. This step is especially helpful if you have really dark eyebrows. To recreate Columbia’s naturally pale complexion, I opted for a cream foundation that was a shade or two lighter than my natural skin tone. A lot of people make the mistake of using clown white, which can look too ghostly or clown like especially if you’re performing on stage in front of a lot of bright lights.

Next, I set the cream base with Cover FX Setting Fx to lock in the product. I really like this translucent powder because it has light reflecting minerals that diffuse the skin and give it a subtle, iridescent glow. For the eyes, I primed my lids with a shimmery primer by Urban Decay in the color Sin and applied it all the way up to the brow. This helps to compliment the peachy gold tone shadow I used all over the lid and really accentuates the shine. For the liner, I used the Ben Nye Cake Liner in black all over the lid and up to the crease with a thin, tapered paint brush. You can purchase various sized paint brushes from your local art supplies store which is a great if you’re on a budget or for those of you looking for tools tiny enough for detail work.

The great thing about the cake liner is that it is activated by water, so it is much easier to create a fluid shape, especially with the aid of a small liner brush. If you’re worried about the liner smudging, you can always apply a sealant gel over top to create a waterproof barrier. To give the liner a little more depth, apply a matte, black eye shadow over top and a thin line of liquid liner on your lashes to break up the black color. As for the lower lash line, I used the same tapered brush and swept the liner from the outer corner of my eye all the way to the inner corner to create a small v shape. You want the look to be as black as possible, so be sure to top it off with a black gel liner in the water line to create even more definition. For a finishing touch on the eyes, I added a pair of Quo false lashes in #805 to enhance the eyes and give it a flared and full bodied look.

As for the cheeks, start with a brush that has a fairly rectangular, domed shape. Dab the brush liberally into a hot fuchsia eye shadow and begin buffing in a downward motion, starting from the hairline. Add a white, frosted highlight directly above the blush to give it a little more pizazz and the face portion is complete. To finish off the look, fill in your entire lips with a red lip liner, making sure to emphasize the M shape in your cupids bow. Top it off with an orange-red lipstick and a gloss if you do desire.
