This is my first submission to Dark Beauty Magazine. The inspiration for this issue calls upon vibrant cosplay culture, Harajuku street wear and various Lolita fashions found in Tokyo, Japan. I was given the freedom to create my own look, so I decided to combine recognizable elements from each theme! This is also the newest installment in the subculture series that Siobhan of LetzMakeup and I started a few years back.
When it comes to a specific subculture, it can mean many things to many different people. In this case, I’ve taken the classic winged shape and dramatic lines prevalent in a lot of Gothic makeup looks and designed something that I think could bridge the gap between many subcultural aesthetics. I like my designs to be interchangeable, as well as diverse!
With that being said, I also liked how the bright purple tones are indicative of the bold colors found within the cyber pop and Japanese Decora fashions, but also worked as a great contrast to my red hair. To enhance the doll like quality to my eyes, I decided to add a white liner and false lashes to my lower lash as seen in many anime and Japanese cosplay looks. I thought it added a nice, editorial touch to the entire concept. If you wanted to wear this out and tone down the drama, remove the bottom lashes and go for a nude lip.
