This is the second look that I submitted to Dark Beauty Magazine. With spring just around the corner I wanted to abandon the usual muted winter palette and create a highly vibrant, editorial look. This design relies on neon pastel tones and clean, graphic lines. There have been a number of pastel hair and makeup trends hitting the runways this year, so I thought I could show you how to create a look that plays off this playful and bold theme.

I tried to implement a color scheme that hasn’t already made an appearance on my channel to give you an idea of how to use certain bright colors in a complementary way. I think a lot of people are afraid to experiment with color and that’s exactly what this look was; experimentation. This design was the result of a spur of the moment make up session that produced a look that I was proud enough to share with all of you. This hasn’t happened to me in a while since I usually plan out my looks in advance, so it was refreshing to feel the flow of spontaneous creativity again.

The key elements that make this look work is keeping a sense of continuity with the textures within the makeup. I used all matte shades which have a tendency to be hard to blend, but when they do, they meld seamlessly with one another. Matte colors also tend to be much brighter than your average shimmery eye shadow and add a lot more definition to the look because it lacks the light reflecting, iridescent sheen that detracts from the depth of the lines.

Another element to consider is what base you use for your eye shadow. I love using bright eye liner pencils to enhance the colors of my make up. Urban Decay, MAC and Make Up For Ever are wonderful examples of companies that produce high quality, pigmented eye liners that you can use for every kind of look, whether it be bridal or theatrical. I think they’re great tools to map out the placement of your shadow, as well as providing much more opaque and vibrant looks. I was also dying to do a bright ombre look with my new Make up For Ever Aqua lip pencils since they’re a beautiful accessory and addsa nice colorful pop to any makeup look.
